The 2009 Flag Day Parade in Appleton, Wisconsin: The Nation's Best
-- Photos by Jeff Lindsay --
Flag Day is a serious event for patriotic Appleton, Wisconsin and the surrounding Fox Valley. Our Flag Day Parade is one of the best in the nation and may be the longest in the nation, lasting nearly 3 hours. I took over 1,000 photos at this year's event. Here are a few selections in low-resolution. Originals and prints are available in some cases.
Veterans carrying and looking up to the flag. We owe so much to our vets!
Dad and kids (I think) riding on a float.
Corvettes crowding the street and pleasing the crowd on College Avenue, Appleton, for the June 13, 2009 Flag Day Parade.
The driver of a flag-toting tractor. For me, this image captures something of the experience, the depth, and the practical patriotism of many in the older generation in Wisconsin. An important aspect of the Appleton Flag Day experience.
The Wells Fargo man is a-coming to town!
Boy riding in a Wells-Fargo Coach.
Flag girl marching with Appleton North High School.
Representing the Founding Fathers, I think.
Marching band from Lakeside Lutheran in Lake Mills, Wisconsin (a little east of Madison).

Lead marchers from a dance group, Marcia's School of Dance.
A pair from a square dancing group.
A trio of unusual crested yellow birds.
Servicement from the US Army reflecting the best of Wisconsin.
The Appleton East Patriots of Appleton East High School.
The Fox Valleyaires remind us that "Singing is not just for the birds." Great talent!
A war memorial on a float. Never forget!
Bagpipe player with the Tripoli Highlanders / Lake Lodge Pipes and Drums.
Drummer with the Tripoli Highlanders.
Trumpet reflecting Appleton in the Los Americanos band.
Tuba in the Los Americanos band.
A proud and patriotic Harley rider. Notice the black POW/MIA flag. God bless those who remember our soldiers who were lost in war and may still be held captive.
Some Wisconsin royalty also graced our parade.
The Fox Valley has an increasingly vibrant Latino community. Here is one of our own wise Latinas.
Another view from our Latino community.
Flag team from Appleton West High School.
Brass from Appleton North High School's Marching Band. I like the reflections in the bells of the instruments.
The US Army Cadets were there to keep the crowd under control. God bless the young men and women (and the older ones, too) in our armed forces.
"Let Freedom Ring!" A float from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
